Heroes, History & the Homestretch • Best 60ish Seconds
For June 6th's Best 60ish Seconds, Charlie marks the 82nd anniversary of D-Day — June 6, 1944. On that morning, Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy in Operation Overlord, and Charlie reflects on the enormous courage it took for those young men to charge into the water and up those beaches.
In a personal moment, Charlie recalls the role of General Leonard T. Gerow who commanded the U.S. V Corps and was the first corps commander ashore at Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944. General Gerow later became the first American major general to enter Paris following its liberation. Charlie shares and reflects on General Gerow's address to his troops — a speech that captures both the gravity of the moment and the character of the men who answered the call that day.
Charlie closes by previewing tonight's 158th Belmont Stakes at Saratoga Race Course — the third and final jewel of the Triple Crown, with post time at 7:04 p.m. ET on NBC. The nine-horse field features a rematch of the Kentucky Derby's top two finishers: morning-line favorite Renegade (2-1), trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr., looking to avenge his narrow Derby loss. Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo (9-2), trained by history-making Cherie DeVaux — the first woman ever to saddle a Derby winner — will look to add a Belmont trophy to his mantle. Also watch for Chief Wallabee (3-1) and Commandment (6-1), both of whom have the pedigree to contend at Saratoga.
